The new competence of the Council for Media Services, which arises from the Media Services Act about media literacy, is to initiate, examine and analyse the media environment concerning media literacy and initiate and carry out activities to promote it.
Activities to support the improvement of media literacy or competencies of the Slovak population are carried out by several institutions in academia (science, research and education), at the level of state institutions and the third sector. The Council's ambition is to bring these activities together and link them, building on the outputs of analytical and research activities.
On this basis, the Council for Media Services aims to:
- map developments in the field of media literacy – legislative processes, research activities and the work of organisations,
- bring together actors in the field of media literacy,
- report on what is happening and what is emerging in the field,
- represent Slovakia in expert groups on media literacy at the European level (European Commission, EPRA, ERGA).
