Role of UNESCO
UNESCO plays a significant role in promoting freedom of expression, media pluralism, and strengthening media and information literacy. It is founded on the belief that access to reliable information and the ability to critically evaluate it are essential pillars of a democratic society.
UNESCO has long supported:
- the independence and pluralism of the media,
- freedom of expression and the safety of journalists,
- the fight against hate speech and disinformation,
- the development of innovative educational methodologies,
- enhancing the public’s ability to navigate the information environment,
- universal access to information and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Global Media and Information Literacy Week (Global MIL Week)
Media and information literacy is one of UNESCO’s top priorities. In this field, the organization supports countries by developing methodological materials, implementing educational tools, and carrying out thematic initiatives at both regional and global levels.
Since 2011, UNESCO has organized the Global Media and Information Literacy Week, which brings together experts, educators, governments, and civil society with the aim to:
- raise awareness of the importance of media and information literacy for democracy and critical thinking,
- promote cross-sectoral cooperation,
- showcase innovative approaches in education and practice.
Involvement of the Council for Media Services
In Slovakia, the activities and events during Global MIL Week are coordinated by the Media Literacy+ platform, led by the Council for Media Services. The Council regularly publishes updates on its media literacy initiatives on its official website.
